Recombinant Protein Formats: Tagged, Carrier-free or Lyophilised?
How the format of a recombinant protein affects which experiments it can support — and what to specify when you order.
Tagged proteins
A His, Fc or GST tag simplifies detection and purification but can alter folding, interfere with binding studies, and complicate use as a calibrator in immunoassays where a natural analyte is expected.
Carrier-free and lyophilised
Carrier-free preparations avoid the BSA interference that breaks calibrator curves, while lyophilised formats survive ambient shipping and give long freezer-free shelf life once reconstituted properly.
What to specify when ordering
State your downstream application, not just the protein name: antibody pairing, calibrator, cell stimulation or structural work each call for a different format, purity grade and endotoxin level.
